Underwater Tourney Raises Money for Iraq Vet

Over at our sister site Divester, Willy Volk writes about a Fort Collins Marine who wanted to raise some money for his family, so he organized an underwater poker tournament with the help of a local dive shop.

Hoping to get $500, Brian Ivers, a Marine reservist who has done three tours in Iraq since 2002, ended up raising over $1600, instead.

Willy writes, "After 20 years of fundraisers, Center owner Jim Johnson remarked, "It was the most money we've ever raised in any of our events." Evidently, the success was due, in large part, to spectators and friends who added unexpected individual donations to the pot."

Of course, we in the online poker community are no strangers to charity tournaments, but it's really cool to see another example of this great national pastime used in a creative way to help people out.
